Last week, some of our U.S. History students were able to visit the Rochester Museum and Science Center. They had the chance to investigate the history and workings of the Erie Canal, including the social and economic impact on our local area. Artifacts from the interactions between European settlers and the Seneca and Iroquois tribes were on display for the students to examine. They also took a guided tour of an exhibit that discussed Rochester’s important role in the Underground Railroad.

MMCSD eighth grade students Addyson Barnhardt, Jessimar Carrasquillo Moctezuma, Addison Coniglio, Nayshawn Hightower, Monica Lin, Willow Palermo, Tammy Schmieder and Derick Seiwell participated in the New York State YMCA Youth and Government Conference in Albany. Following three months of preparation, students from across the state attend this 3-day experiential learning program in which they serve as part of a model state government debating bills they and their peers have written. “This conference is a scaffold for leadership. Students travel to the capital and formally debate throughout the morning and into the early evening. This is done in the State Assembly, State Senate and committee chambers. It’s a very rewarding experience for the members who attend,” said Mr. Gardner, who accompanied the students on the trip.
